Sailing away on the Islander: Margaritaville at Sea Adventure from Tampa
Published Friday, August 15th 2025 - Updated Sunday, August 17th 2025If you’re looking for a quick getaway with ocean views, tropical vibes, and a touch of Jimmy Buffett’s signature style, a cruise aboard the *Islander* from Margaritaville at Sea might be just what you need. Sailing from the Port of Tampa, our trip offered smooth check-in, comfortable accommodations, and the promise of a carefree escape.
Smooth Sailing Through Check-In
One thing to note if you’re cruising: you *must* check in before 2:30 p.m. to board. We arrived on time and were pleasantly surprised by how efficient the process was. The terminal was bustling with large family groups, but the staff was quick-thinking — they called out for smaller groups of one or two, and we were able to move right to the front of the line. Within minutes, we had our key cards in hand and were walking toward the ship.
A Breezy Balcony with Room to Spare
Our home at sea was a Breezy Balcony cabin, and it lived up to its name. Stepping inside, we found a well-organized space that made unpacking a breeze. There was a mini fridge for keeping drinks cold, an in-room safe for passports and valuables, and ample storage with spacious closets and plenty of drawers
The bathroom was a pleasant surprise — not the cramped space many cruise travelers are used to. The shower was larger than average, offering enough room to move around comfortably, and the overall layout felt thoughtfully designed. Of course, the best part was stepping out onto our balcony to watch the water sparkle in the Florida sun.
The Journey Ahead
The start of our cruise was relaxed and seamless, setting the tone for the days ahead. From the friendly check-in staff to the comfort of our balcony cabin, Margaritaville at Sea made it easy to switch into vacation mode before we even set sail.
This ship may have started life in the Costa fleet, but after its tropical transformation, it’s all about Island Vibes. Everywhere you turn are playful nods to Jimmy Buffett’s laid-back lifestyle. Dining spaces carry upbeat and cheeky names, like the *Port of Indecision Buffet*—where the Caribbean colors practically jump off the walls—and the breezy *Fins* dining room. The central atrium bursts with the hues of sun, surf, and sand, giant flip-flop included, making you feel like you’ve been transported right to that mythical perfect island.
It’s a smaller, older ship by modern standards, which gives it a nostalgic feel, but thanks to the Margaritaville makeover, it’s bursting with charm.
Food: Cheeseburgers in Paradise (and Then Some)
Let’s start with one of my absolute highlights: the *Cheeseburger in Paradise* spot. I’m not kidding when I say this is hands-down the best burger at sea. Perfectly cooked patties, all the toppings you could dream of, plus fresh, hot fries—it was so good we had it almost every day for lunch.
Dinner in *Fins* was our nightly ritual. The food and service, while warm and welcoming, could be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes the description on the menu didn’t exactly match what arrived at the table. But when the kitchen hit it right—oh, it was good. One standout night brought an indulgent mac and cheese with burnt ends and bacon, followed by tender BBQ short ribs.
We also became loyal customers of Frank and Lola’s Pizzeria, which seemed to be open whenever the craving hit. Freshly baked, flavorful pizza was a lifesaver if the main dining room wasn’t quite hitting the mark.
The ship offers two specialty restaurants:
JWB Prime Steakhouse– We didn’t get the chance to try it this trip.
Far Side Sushi – A hit! Fresh, generous portions of sushi that tasted just as good as it looked.
Pro tip: If you don’t opt for the drink package, you can still enjoy water, ice, coffee, tea, and lemonade anytime at the buffet stations.
Entertainment & Activities: Days Filled with Fun
This isn’t the kind of cruise where you sit around hoping something will happen—there’s always something going on. Mingle over Bingo, test your knowledge at trivia, browse an art auction, or enjoy live music popping up around the ship.
Night brings even more choices: game shows, comedians, singers, dancers, and an incredible pair of acrobats who brought the house down. The theater is a product of the ship’s original design—cozy but not exactly built for big productions—which actually works in your favor because it’s never too crowded to grab a great seat.
One afternoon, I joined an arts and crafts session making sea-glass souvenirs—now a cheerful little reminder of my trip sitting on my shelf at home.
Touching Tribute: Honoring the Military
Of all the moments on the cruise, none touched me more than the last day’s military appreciation event. All guests who have served in any branch of the Military are honored in a heartfelt ceremony.
Cruise Director Zee Jay, who shared the story of how her grandmother was rescued from a concentration camp by American forces, clearly pours her heart into this event. One by one, each branch was called forward, personal stories were shared, and the ceremony concluded with *Taps* and “Proud to Be an American.”
It was a moving moment—many of us wiping away tears—as the entire room recognized and celebrated those who serve. There was also mention of first responders, including teachers and medical professionals.
The Little Things
Since The Islander doesn’t have a ship app yet, you’ll receive printed daily programs in your stateroom—a throwback touch that actually adds to the relaxed vibe.
Final Thoughts
Sailing The Islander is like stepping into a floating island getaway—bright, colorful, and filled with music, flavor, and fun. While it’s not perfect (no cruise is), it has heart, personality, and plenty of places to find your own little slice of paradise at sea.
If you’re ready for burgers, sea views, and that signature Jimmy Buffett escapism, this is the ship for you.
If you’re considering this cruise, know that a little timing at check-in can make all the difference, and that upgrading to a balcony cabin is well worth it. There’s nothing quite like waking up to the ocean at your doorstep, with the promise of adventure waiting beyond the horizon.
